How the calculation works
- Annual pay. Your pay is converted to a yearly figure (hourly pay uses your hours per week times 52).
- Your deductions. Add as many as you like. Each one comes from gross pay (a dollar amount per paycheck, or a percent of gross) or from net pay (taken after taxes). Gross deductions can be pre-tax: health premiums and HSA/FSA money come out before income tax and payroll tax, and traditional 401(k) money comes out before income tax only (Social Security and Medicare are still charged on it, and the 2026 deferral limit of $24,500 applies). After-tax items such as Roth contributions or union dues give no tax savings.
- Federal income tax. The 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household) is subtracted, then the 2026 brackets are applied. The $2,200 child tax credit per child and the $500 credit for other dependents are applied, with the phase-out for higher incomes. The credit first reduces the tax you owe; if it is bigger than your tax, up to $1,700 per child can still come back as a refundable amount, limited by your earnings. Extra federal deductions you enter lower taxable income.
- Social Security and Medicare. 6.2% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, 1.45% Medicare on all pay, and the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).
- State tax. Each state's own brackets, deductions, exemptions and credits, plus state-run payroll programs such as California SDI, New York PFL or Washington's paid-leave and WA Cares premiums.
Your take-home pay is what is left after all of that. The result is an estimate of annual tax liability spread evenly over the year. Your employer's withholding is based on your Form W-4 and can differ, which is why some people get a refund or owe at filing time.
Worked example
A single worker in Texas earning $75,000 and taking no deductions: federal taxable income is $75,000 − $16,100 = $58,900, which is $7,670 of federal income tax. Social Security is $4,650 and Medicare is $1,087.50. Texas has no state income tax. Total tax is $13,407.50, so take-home pay is $61,592.50 a year, about $2,369 every two weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Does Indiana have a state income tax?
Indiana taxes wages with a flat rate of 2.95% for 2026. Brackets, the standard deduction and credits are applied in this calculator.
Is this calculator accurate for 2026?
It uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deductions published by the IRS, the 2026 Social Security wage base ($184,500), and each state's 2026 rates as enacted by October 2026. It is an estimate: it does not include itemized deductions, bonuses withheld at a flat rate, or credits other than the child and dependent credits.
Why is my real paycheck different?
Your employer withholds tax using the percentage method and the choices on your Form W-4, not your final tax bill. Extra withholding, a second job, bonuses, and local taxes all move the number. Use your latest pay stub to compare and adjust the deduction fields.
Do I pay state tax where I live or where I work?
Usually the state where you work taxes your wages, and your home state may tax them too, with a credit to avoid paying twice. This calculator taxes the state you pick as if you live and work there.
Which states have no income tax on wages?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. A few of them still take small payroll deductions (Washington's paid-leave premiums, for example), which are included.
What are state exemptions or allowances?
Many states reduce your taxable pay by a set amount for each person you claim, usually you, your spouse and each dependent. Employers withhold using the number on your state form (the Illinois IL-W-4, for example). Enter that total in the state exemptions box to mirror your own paperwork, or leave it blank to count everyone automatically. If you know your total state deductions in dollars, enter them instead and they replace the built-in standard deduction and exemptions.
Are local and city taxes included?
New York City, Yonkers and Maryland county income taxes can be selected. For other local taxes, such as Ohio or Pennsylvania city taxes, enter the rate in the city or local income tax box.
