The math
Hourly to salary: annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks. A $32 rate at 40 hours for 52 weeks is $66,560. Salary to hourly: divide the salary by hours per week times paid weeks.
Overtime: under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and many union contracts add daily overtime or double time, so use the rate field to match your situation.
Worked example
$32 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks is $66,560 a year, or $5,547 a month. Add 5 hours of overtime a week at 1.5x and you earn another $12,480 a year, for $79,040 total.
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a year?
A full-time schedule of 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. That is why a quick way to estimate salary is to multiply the hourly rate by 2,080.
Does a salary include overtime?
Not necessarily. Exempt salaried employees usually do not receive overtime pay. Non-exempt employees paid a salary are still owed overtime for hours over 40 in a week.
Is this before or after taxes?
Before taxes. Use the take-home pay calculator to see your pay after federal, state and payroll taxes.
